Afternoon
and Evening Programme |
 |
 |
 |
Your main Training Course finishes each
weekday at 15.30. You can choose to extend your course
by attending workshops, seminars, cultural activities
and sports on the Afternoon and Evening Programmes.
Afternoon Programme 16.00 - 17.30 (Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays/first
Friday only)
Depending on the numbers of teachers during
each course
period, you can choose between 1 and 4 activities each
afternoon (except for
Wednesdays). These can include:
 |
 |
| • |
A seminar/workshop relating to teaching or your
own language improvement. Some examples: 'Using
Drama Activities in the Classroom', 'Working with
Multiple Intelligences', or 'Improve Your Vocabulary'; |
| • |
A cultural activity. Some examples: 'Historical Tour of Canterbury
with a Professional Guide', 'Campus Quiz: Discovering the University
Campus' or 'English Through Japanese Art'. On some days, optional
visits (e.g. to The Canterbury Tales Museum or a Canterbury River Boat
Tour) will be advertised. You can book a place on one of these visits for
a small fee (approximately £5.00 to £8.00); |
| • |
Sport and recreational activities. Some examples: T'ai Chi,
aerobics, tennis and squash. |
Evening Programme 20.00-22.00 (Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays/second
Friday only)
On some evenings, you will be able to choose from further
seminars or more relaxed activities to complement your
professional development. There will be 1-2 activities
each evening. Some examples:
 |
 |
| • |
'Scotland Through Music and Song'. |
| • |
An evening of Salsa and Merengue. |
| • |
'Wales: Magic, Mystery and Myth' |
| • |
Talk on the British Education System. |
| • |
An Introduction to Aromatherapy. |
| • |
New Trends in Teaching English. |
Wednesdays
 |
 |
| • |
There are no programmed activities on Wednesday
afternoon and evening after 15.30. This is to allow
you to follow independent plans. We suggest you
use this time to work on individual projects using
the facilities in our Resources Room or in Canterbury
(e.g. collection and development of authentic teaching
materials). On some Wednesdays, you can also visit
a Book Exhibition given by a large ELT (English
Language Teaching) distributor. |
| • |
Pilgrims has arranged for you to purchase teaching
and language publications from these Exhibitors
at a discount. You can also order materials to be
posted to your home address. |
| • |
On the first Wednesday evening of your course,
your group and trainer will have a meal in a local
restaurant off campus. This gives you the opportunity
to get to know your colleagues and trainers better.
The cost of this meal is not included in your fees. |
Last Friday
 |
 |
| • |
Your course ends with a Course Party on the last
Friday of your course. The Pilgrims tradition is
for you and your class to present a short sketch,
a song or mini-performance at the party which might
reflect what you have learnt or experienced during
your stay. |
Workshops
 |
 |
| • |
During your two weeks, you can also attend a series
of specialist seminars, during the afternoon and
evening, presented by a visiting ELT (English Language
Teaching) expert. Invited specialists are either
experienced teacher trainers from the UK and abroad
(e.g. in Primary Education or Teacher Development)
or academics from UK universities. Details will
be available nearer the summer or will be given
to you in your Activity Programme booklet when you
arrive. |
Weekends
 |
 |
| • |
On the middle Saturday of your course, the day
is open to allow you to make independent plans.
You can travel to London, spend a day shopping in
Canterbury or take a local tour to a place of interest
in Kent or Sussex. On the middle Sunday of your
course Pilgrims offer an excursion for a fee of
between £15 and £20 which can
be booked during your stay. Information
about these excursions and other suggestions for
you will be provided on
Pilgrims notice boards at The University. If you
wish to spend a weekend in
London, we suggest you make accommodation arrangements
before you come to
England. |
| • |
We have included information
about Bed and Breakast accommodation you could use
at Bankside House - a modern residence for the London
School of Economics near the Globe Theatre. |
