Who is this course for?
Secondary school teachers
Teachers who teach teenagers in private institutions
You need an intermediate level of English and above to participate in this course

What is the Rationale for these courses?

Secondary school teaching has similarities & differences throughout the world. On these courses, you will have the opportunity to share these experiences with other teachers and with Pilgrims trainers. While the course will give you an opportunity to improve your own English, it focuses far more on methodology in Secondary school teaching.

The courses will also consider the relevance for Secondary teaching of recent ideas in the teaching of English as a foreign language as well as how 'traditional' ideas can be used creatively. You will also consider preparing interesting lessons for a variety of teaching situations (including mixed ability & large classes), reflecting on your own teaching situation & developing yourself both professionally & personally. You will be encouraged to re-assess your 'teacher beliefs and attitudes' in the light of current trends in methodology.

What are the key course contents?

Topics include:
» ways of presenting & practising grammar & vocabulary
» using music, story, pictures & drama in your teaching
» ideas for encouraging learner independence in the class
» dealing with different learning styles
» ideas to encourage pair/group work at different levels
» work on pronunciation & the learning of its components
» adapting/supplementing course books
» using texts for different purposes
» ideas for assessment/testing
» practical classroom issues for teachers working in a monolingual context
» dealing with “difficult behaviour”
