COURSE SUMMARY
This is a methodology course which asks and answers the following question
What are the 'rules' of English?
What should we be teaching our students?
Do we teach genuine English or a highly stylised, artificial model?
What does recent research tell us about written versus spoken English, and how can we apply this research to the classroom situation?
These are some of the issues, which this course aims to address. The course looks particularly at the areas of Spoken Grammar and The Lexical Approach. The former based on results from computer data banks of real spoken English. The latter is a revolutionary system that promotes vocabulary and word partnerships (collocations) as the basis for teaching grammar above verb phrases. It also explores what these two key areas contribute to the growing tradition of Humanistic Approaches to teaching and learning. Both the lexical approach and spoken grammar provide insights into what constitutes the 'grammar of English' and also serves as a useful lexis for teacher's own language development.

WHAT ARE THE KEY COURSE CONTENTS?
Materials will be partly customised for the group by the main trainer, supplemented by published materials.
