WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Native and non-native teachers of English and other languages at Upper Secondary and Tertiary levels (16 years of age and above).

COURSE SUMMARY
Recent world events have seen the enforced migration of millions of people across the globe. These people often arrive in their host country traumatised, culturally disassociated and unable to function in their new target language.
This course provides teachers with practical techniques and activities that will help immigrants to learn the target language effectively. English will be the language used on the course. However, the methods and activities will be readily adaptable for the teaching of other languages.

WHAT ARE THE KEY COURSE CONTENTS?
Materials will be created for the group by the main trainer, supplemented by published materials and by work presented by the participants themselves.
Topics include:
How to teach:
» Real beginners
» Basic literary skills
» Spoken 'survival language', (shopping, interviews with officials etc.)
» Cultural sensitivity
» Language of interviews (for employment purposes)
» Aural comprehension Other areas will include:
» Counselling skills for teachers (active listening etc.)
» Building trust in the classroom
» Exploring the limits of teacher responsibility
» Selecting, adapting and producing appropriate classroom materials
